WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?
A Christian is one who, having understood the ABC of the
gospel of Christ, has received Christ, has taken his stand upon Him, and experiences
salvation through him.
(a) When the Christian first believed, he experienced
salvation, e.g. he was washed, sanctified and justified
(1 Cor. 1:18). He was enriched by Christ (1 Cor.1:5)
He found the cross the power of God (1 Cor. 1:18)
and Christ became to him all he needed (1 Cor. 1:30)
He continues to receive God's grace, he continues to be enriched by Christ(1
Cor. 1:5; 15:10; 16:23)
(c) He is delivered from his old state of sin
(1 Cor. 15:17)
and he is freed from the power of sin (Rom. 8:2; 1 Cor.
6:12; 8:9)
(d) He knows the power of the Spirit in his life
(1 Cor. 6:19,20; 12:7)
(e) He is kept by Christ
(1 Cor. 1:8; 1 Peter 1:5)
WHAT IS FAITH?
Faith is both a decisive
act and a sustained attitude. It begins as an act, by which a person abandons
reliance on himself to merit salvation, has a firm conviction as to the truth
of God's promises of mercy in Jesus Christ, and depends sincerely upon them.
After this, faith becomes a habit of that person's life. Faith rests on certain
facts which the apostles were careful to preach.
(a) Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God
(John 20:31; Acts 9:20)
(b) He died for our sins (1
Peter 2:24)
(c) He was burried and was raised to life again
on the third day (1 Peter 1:3; Rom. 4:25)
(d)His death and resurrection took place according
to the manner in which God had promised beforehand in the Old Testament Scriptures
(1 Cor. 15:3, 4)
(e) On the grounds of what Christ accomplished
men may receive forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts
2: 38,39)
WHAT IS REPENTANCE?
Repentance is turning
from sin to God, as a result of a change of mind and heart about sin.
(a) God commands it on the part of all men.
(Acts 17:30)
(b) Unless men repent, they will perish. (Luke
13:3, 5)
(c) Repentance is the first response demanded
of men if they are to respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Acts
2:38 )
(d) Repentance is the first condition God imposes
if men are to find him. (Zech. 1:3,4; Acts 20:21)
(e) Repentance is a condition of cleansing, forgiveness,
of salvation, of entry into the kingdom of heaven, of eternal life, for escaping
the judgement of God upon sin. (Isa. 6:5; Luke 24:47;
Acts 3: 19; 26:18; Matt. 4:17; Acts 11:18; Acts 17:30,31)
